Archaeologists discover 2,400-year-old figurines in an ancient pyramid

Archaeologists uncovered five old ceramic figurines at the summit of the biggest pyramid at San Isidro in El Salvador. Jan Szymanski, an archaeologist at the University of Warsaw and lead author of the study, explained to Live Science that the figurines sport dramatic facial expressions that shift when viewed from a different angle. Aside from the five intact figurines, archaeologists recovered fragments of other sculptures from the site. Another similar discovery was made in 2012, when six shattered female figurines were recovered at a cemetery in western Guatemala dating back to 350100 BC.
