Political songs have no place in temple festivals, religious events, says Kerala HC

The Hindu

Stating that political songs have no place in temple festivals and religious events, the High Court of Kerala has directed the Travancore Devaswom Board to file an affidavit within a week on the actions that have been taken against the advisory committee of the Kadakkal Devi temple in Kollam for organising a musical programme during the annual festival, where political songs were performed and political party flags were displayed on the stage. A Division Bench of the court issued the order on a petition filed by Vishnu Sunil Panthalam, who approached the court seeking a directive to prevent the use of the temple premises for promoting or facilitating any political party or activities, in order to ensure that temples remained solely dedicated to religious and cultural purposes. He alleged that the temple advisory committee had permitted Aloshy, a singer, to perform political songs during the temple festival on March 10. The court strongly went on to criticise the TDB and the temple advisory committee for allowing such a programme on the temple grounds.
