UN warns rebel M23 offensive in Congo could spiral into a regional war

The United Nations is warning violence isolated to a small part of the Democratic Republic of Congo could spread. Conflict in the country's east is nothing new, with Rwanda-backed rebel group M23 involved in fighting for the past three decades. Goma lies close to the DRC's border with Rwanda, and both the Congo's government and the United Nations peacekeeping force in the area have accused Rwanda of backing M23's advance. The UN, United States and other Western powers say Rwanda has fuelled the conflict by deploying thousands of its own troops onto the DRC's soil in support of M23. In recent days, the UN and global powers have expressed concerns the conflict could spiral into a regional war akin to those of 1996-1997 and 1998-2003 that killed millions, mostly from hunger and disease.
