Veteran Bharatanatyam dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy dies at 84
The HinduBharatanatyam and Kuchipudi veteran Yamini Krishnamurthy died at the Apollo hospital in New Delhi on August 3. Former Rajya Sabha MP and Bharatanatyam dancer Sonal Mansingh said Ms. Krishnamurthy “blazed like a meteor in the sky”. Expressing grief over the demise of Ms. Krishnamurthy, Mr. Naidu said the Bharatanatyam doyen, born at Madanapalli in Andhra Pradesh in 1940, had served as the ‘asthana narthaki’ of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. Ms. Krishnamurthy brought fame to the Kuchipudi dance in foreign countries, he said on X. Mr. Reddy also took to X to pay tributes to Ms. Krishnamurti. “Sangeet Natak Akademi and its associate bodies deeply mourn the sad demise of Yamini Krishnamurti, a leading Bharatanatyam exponent, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellow, and Padma Vibhushan Awardee, who passed away today.
