Pedestrians bear the brunt as e-scooter crashes rise three-fold

E-scooter crashes have increased nearly three-fold in a year, the latest Department for Transport figures show. And the number of pedestrians injured after being hit by e-scooters was nearly four times higher in 2021 compared with the previous year. The casualty statistics also show that 64 cyclists were injured in e-scooter crashes in 2021, up from 21 during the previous year. “The Government must stop the sale of private e-scooters because they can be modified to exceed speed limits.” She added that because e-scooters were “regularly” being ridden on pavements they posed a “serious risk” to the blind and visually impaired, elderly, wheelchair users, young children and pregnant women. Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, said that although the number of collisions increased “initial reporting shows e-scooter riders are more likely to hurt themselves rather than others”.
