Steelers QB Kenny Pickett on track to play a week after suffering a concussion
New York TimesPITTSBURGH — Mike Tomlin had a plan in place for how he wanted to approach the Steelers’ quarterback position when Ben Roethlisberger retired. Even though Tomlin never went into complete detail about what that plan entailed, it was obvious from the get-go that it wasn’t going to include Mitch Trubisky or Kenny Pickett looking over their shoulder after every errant pass. And even though Trubisky put together a game-winning, eye-opening performance in the fourth quarter Sunday to upset the 10-point road favorite Buccaneers after an ineffective Pickett left with a concussion, Tomlin is sticking with the consistency angle — or as he said Tuesday, “We aren’t going to blow into the wind.” The correct cliche might have been “spit into the wind,” but the point was made. “We feel extremely comfortable about our medical experts in that area, and I’ve been consistent in my messaging in that regard,” Tomlin said. Asked what he liked about Trubisky’s performance, Tomlin said, “His aggressive pursuit of victory.” Still, that wasn’t enough for Trubisky to move up the depth chart for at least one week.
