StoryFest holds workshop to help NSW south coast authors self-publish books

For many authors, self-publishing might seem like an easy option, but as Helen Moody found out, it can be really hard. "The books I wrote were the sort of ratshit boring books in the days of Murdoch press and commissioned gardening books which are a dime a dozen," Moody said. "Very few organisations give a grant to an individual, it has to go through an organisation that is incorporated, so you can't just apply for a grant to write a book," she said. "She said, 'I'm sorry to tell you, but they've decided that the $50 retail price is too high, and they won't stock the book,'" Moody said. Even though you think it's ready to go, it can be made better Think carefully about who your audience is and how you are going to connect with them Foster a relationship with independent booksellers by introducing yourself, buying books, supporting other authors Source: Michael Winkler "When they ask you to write a pitch, it's a long detailed thing, and you wonder if it's worth doing it," she said.
