ABCWith Israel warning residents in the north of Gaza to evacuate ahead of a planned ground invasion, Palestinians have been fleeing south — and all eyes are on its closest neighbour, Egypt, as a potential lifeline. Egypt had also blamed the Israeli government for "not taking a position on opening the Rafah crossing from the Gaza side" in the days before Biden's visit. The Rafah crossing is the only way out The Rafah crossing, which borders Egypt's Sinai peninsula, is the most viable escape route for Palestinians who are hemmed in by Israel and the sea. "During this time Egypt was in conflict with the state of Israel, which had invaded the Sinai peninsula … Much of the lending was from Arab states with large amounts of dollars from high oil prices, including to fund the military due to Egypt's role as a frontline state against Israel," according to a summary by the UK-based Debt Justice organisation. "Gulf Arab countries, especially Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, are estimated to have given Egypt $US100 billion since Sisi's coup in 2013, mainly in the form of central bank deposits and fuel," Imad Harb, from Arab Center Washington DC, wrote this year.
