Chennai Metro Rail Limited considers regional rapid transit system to planned airport in Parandur

As plans are afoot to build a second airport for the city at Parandur, Chennai Metro Rail Limited has been considering establishing a regional rapid transit system to enable easy access to the airport. Similarly, Chennai Metro Rail Phase I trains have a maximum speed of 80 kmph and an average speed of 35 kmph. Though CMRL recently handed over the detailed project report for the ₹15,906-crore Poonamallee-Parandur network, which will cover 52.94 km in the first phase, it is planning a metro rail between Poonamallee and Sunkuvarchatram via Sriperumbudur. Since we need connectivity between the present airport and the new one, we are looking at the possibility of constructing a metro rail system between Chennai Airport and Sriperumbudur.
