Are women free to spend the money they earn? What GDB survey reveals
India TodayA woman's right to manage her own earnings remains a contested issue across India, with attitudes varying significantly by region, according to the inaugural India Today Gross Domestic Behaviour survey. A majority of respondents, 69 per cent, believe that women should have full control over their own earnings, while 31 per cent felt that financial decisions should require family approval. Similarly, when asked about women taking up jobs outside the home, 98 per cent of respondents in Uttar Pradesh were in favour, yet 38 per cent in Gujarat opposed the notion. Overall, 84 per cent of the respondents said that female members of the family should be encouraged to take up jobs outside the house, while 15 per cent disagreed. The variations across states were stark - only 2 per cent of Uttarakhand's respondents condoned domestic violence, whereas a staggering 31 per cent in Andhra Pradesh justified it.
