Jadavpur University student’s death: UGC not satisfied with ‘generic’ report by university

The University Grants Commission in a letter to the Registrar of Jadavpur University said that it was not satisfied with the report submitted by the university in connection with the death of a first year university student at its main hostel. “In this connection, the report submitted to UGC vide your reference letter number R-PA/U-01/139/2023 dated 14 th August 2023 was examined and it was found to be very generic in nature basically mentioning therein mostly the reactive approaches adopted in the matter rather than proactive measures taken to curb the menace of ragging and therefore, the Commission is not satisfied with the report submitted by you,” the UGC said in its letter dated August 16. Meanwhile, Jadavpur University Registrar Snehmanju Basu said on Thursday that she had forwarded the letter to the Office of Dean of Students that maintains data relating to students. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari held a rally outside the university campus targeting the Left and ultra Left parties and blamed them for the student’s death.
