MLS will take over Real Salt Lake sale process in 2021 if no buyer is found

New York Times

Major League Soccer will take over the process of selling Real Salt Lake if current owner Dell Loy Hansen cannot find a new buyer for the team by Jan. 8th, multiple sources have told The Athletic. In addition to Real Salt Lake, Hansen also owns the NWSL’s Utah Royals, USL’s Real Monarchs, Rio Tinto Stadium, Zions Bank Stadium and the club’s academy and training facility. If MLS takes over the process of selling Real Salt Lake, sources said that the league would handle inquiries from potential buyers, perform due diligence on them and, ultimately, field and weigh any offers made for the team. Should the league take over the selling process, the sources said Hansen would continue to fund the organization’s operations until a new buyer closes on a purchase. The 42-year-old went with Hansen on a tour of the club’s academy, training facility, Zions Bank Stadium and Rio Tinto Stadium, but sources said that the meeting didn’t go particularly well.
