Interview with S. Chockalingam, Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer: CEO clarifies about doubts on EVMs, voting numbers and other issues

Days after the announcement of Maharashtra Assembly election results, doubts are being raised about electronic voting machines, the voting numbers, the disparity between postal ballots and votes. Mock poll is conducted between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. in front of the polling agents appointed by the candidates, so they themselves can check if by pressing a particular button, the vote is going to a particular person, and that the VVPAT printout is given accordingly. After every two hours, voting percentage is taken from every polling station — there are over 1 lakh polling stations in Maharashtra. As far as the 5 p.m. data is concerned, it is being compared to Jharkhand, where voting ends earlier, and where people historically prefer to vote earlier in the day.
