Make e-scooter riders wear helmets, coroner urges - after father-of-four, 41, died after losing control of a vehicle while speeding along a road
Daily MailHelmets should be mandatory for e-scooter riders a coroner has said, following a father-of-four’s death. An inquest into Mr Isaacs’s death heard he was travelling along a road in Nottingham on May 23 when he ‘lost control’ of his e-scooter and fell. In his prevention of future deaths report, Mr Hartley said: ‘Due to the expectation of their use on the road, and their vulnerability, there is a risk of death to riders of electric scooters and bicycles not wearing protective headwear who are involved in collisions, even at lower speeds.’ Daniel Isaacs, 41, suffered a head injury when he fell off his scooter last year An inquest into Mr Isaacs’s death heard he was travelling along a road in Nottingham on May 23 when he ‘lost control’ E-scooters are available in many towns and cities around the UK, but helmets are not currently a legal requirement The East Midlands assistant coroner sent the report to the Department for Transport, which has until February 18 to respond. We don’t want anyone else, any other families, to go through the pain and grief we have gone through so we’re urging people to wear a helmet and to fully understand the safety risks and laws if they are riding on an e-scooter.’ The family also urged people to ‘think twice’ before buying an e-scooter as a gift for someone else, adding: ‘If they can only be ridden in private places such as a back garden, is there much point in having them? Privately owned e-scooters – which can reach 90mph with modifications – are sold widely without identity checks and can only be used on private land ‘This makes Daniel’s untimely death much sadder as he had fought so hard to stay alive.’ A Mail investigation yesterday found e-scooter collisions have trebled in three years, with 29 people dying between 2020 and 2023.
