Bengal blues for BJP again: Why even lure of posts didn't net 'active' members
India TodayWhen Union home minister Amit Shah last October declared the ambitious goal of enrolling 10 million members to the BJP in West Bengal, it was a clarion call for mobilisation at the grassroots. Worse still, the number of active BJP members in the state stands at a woeful 45,000, a stark mismatch with the organisational needs of a party that aspires to end the Trinamool Congress’s uninterrupted run in power in elections next year. With 1,326 BJP mandals in Bengal, each requiring a 12-member core committee including the president, the party needs nearly 16,000 active members just at this level. Structural mismatch The BJP’s organisational structure in Bengal requires a minimum 100,000 active members to fill posts at the mandal, Shakti Kendra and booth levels.
