California Democrats want Trump off their ballot too
LA TimesRioters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in Washington. California Democrats are hoping a Tuesday court decision disqualifying former President Trump from the Colorado primary ballot will boost their efforts to bounce him from California’s Republican primary, as a key deadline approaches next week. “This decision is about honoring the rule of law in our country and protecting the fundamental pillars of democracy,” she wrote, citing the Colorado Supreme Court’s 4-3 decision to bar Trump from the ballot in that state. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung previously accused “Joe Biden, Democrats and Never Trumpers” of stretching the law “beyond recognition” because they fear polls showing Trump winning a general election matchup against Biden. “This is a legal question with huge political impact, and I think people need to know what the law allows and provides.” A potential U.S. Supreme Court decision on Colorado would have the greatest effect on other states if the court rules on the central issue — whether Trump can be disqualified based on the Constitution’s insurrection clause — rather than procedural grounds, she said.
