
Several announcements for Thoothukudi, with limited focus on Kanniyakumari
The HinduTamil Nadu’s 2025-2026 Budget presented by Minister of Finance Thangam Thennarasu on Friday announced several significant schemes for Thoothukudi district, while Kanniyakumari district again received fewer dedicated initiatives. In a major infrastructure boost, the government has announced a combined water supply scheme for Thoothukudi district at a cost of ₹370 crore benefitting 1.3 lakh people in 639 rural habitations. Thoothukudi’s growing industrial sector will see further expansion, with the government announcing establishment of synthetic fibre and textile industrial park in the district, following the district’s significant investments in green hydrogen and vehicle manufacturing sectors. The government has also announced an additional ferry terminal from Chinna Muttam port to facilitate service to the glass bridge over the sea in Kanniyakumari and as the first step in the journey towards green energy Pumped Storage Project with a capacity of 1,100 MW at Vellimalai in Kanniyakumari district will be developed through Public Private Partnership mode.
