Sunil Y., alias Peter, whose two shore seine nets were cut through to free whale sharks in back-to-back incidents over the past week at coastal Pallithura rues the fact that he is not eligible for compensation from the government. Under the WTI project, awareness of the migratory whale sharks have significantly improved in Kerala, with reports of fishers taking the effort to return them to the sea after they wash up on the beaches or get caught in fishing nets becoming common. Compensation sought The Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation, an organisation representing the fishing community, demands that the Union and State governments compensate fishermen for rescuing and releasing protected species that get trapped in their nets.
