For Lakers to find life after Kobe, LeBron James must lead them as he did Friday

LOS ANGELES — One voice was needed Friday before the healing process could truly begin. Maybe that’s what he meant when he told his teammates and others in the organization, “God gave me wide shoulders for a reason.” Earlier in the week, James had inspired many in the Lakers organization when he addressed not only his teammates but also owner Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka, two people with deeply personal connections to Bryant. “The fact that I’m here now means so much to me,” James said. “I want to continue along with my teammates, to continue his legacy, not only for this year, but for as long as we can play the game of basketball that we love because that’s what Kobe Bryant would want.” It is only for the truly significant moments that a Lakers star is handed a mic and given the floor to just riff. “In the words of Kobe Bryant, ‘Mamba out,’” James said.
