Inside India’s Detention Camps: Rohingya Refugees Face Abuse, Harsh Conditions

“We have done nothing wrong. Our villages were being burned, and we came here to save our lives”, says Minara Begum, a 45- year-old mother of three from Buthidaung, Myanmar. Through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Canadian High commission requested to interview Minara. But the Indian authorities denied their request to be interviewed either virtually or at the Detention Center for Resettlement in Canada, stating that the Government of India is not willing to allow them to seek asylum in a third country. From May to November 2024, The Azadi Project and Refugees International interviewed Rohingya refugee detainees like Minara, their families, and lawyers, including a visit to a detention centre in India.
