61% oppose interfaith marriages; Chandigarh shocks, Kerala soothes: GDB survey

India, a land of diversity, might not be married happily to the concept of interfaith marriages. Sixty-one per cent of people were opposed to interfaith marriages, according to the inaugural India Today Gross Domestic Behaviour survey. Interreligious and inter-caste marriages have never been easy in India, which has seen a number of killings in the name of family "honour". 56% OF INDIANS OPPOSED TO INTER-CASTE MARRIAGES The India Today GDB survey also found a prevalence in resistance to inter-caste marriages, with 56% of the respondents opposing them. While 84% of the respondents in Uttar Pradesh showed resistance to inter-caste unions, 91% of the people surveyed from Chandigarh were okay with such marriages.
