Self-immolation, gangrape bring women's safety in picture in Mathura-Agra region ahead of UP polls

While a Mathura woman died at the SN Medical College after she set self on fire at the Raya police station when her complaint of molestation against a village pradhan was not registered, a Block Pramukh belonging to the BJP in Agra's Bah was arrested for allegedly gang-raping a woman from Khurja. In the other case reported on Monday, the Agra police arrested two people, including BJP's Bah Block Pramukh Lal Singh in connection with the rape of a woman in a hotel in Tajganj area. The police registered a case and arrested Lal Singh, a resident of Bah's Faraira, and other accused identified as Yatendra on charges of gangrape. Responding to these incidents, Agra Congress chief Devendra Singh Chillu said that Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has focused the party's electoral campaign on women's welfare and empowerment.
