Oilers coaching change clears the way: Ken Holland’s roster construction will now have to stand up to scrutiny

“I believe we have a good team. Whatever happens is on me.” — Ken Holland, Jan. 11, 2021 If it wasn’t already, the pressure is now really ratcheting up on Oilers GM Ken Holland. It wouldn’t be a stretch to argue his best decision as Oilers GM was a move he chose not to make — holding onto then-disgruntled winger Jesse Puljujarvi rather than selling low. One of Holland’s biggest errors was not fixing the goaltending over the last two offseasons, a decision that’s crushed the Oilers this season in particular. The decision to fire Tippett and Playfair wasn’t done in haste — Holland’s been resisting doing so for weeks — but the GM referenced the team’s last two losses on home ice to Vegas and Chicago as the tipping point.
