League Cup hat-trick may help Eddie Nketiah take control of his Arsenal career as end of contract nears
New York TimesIn scoring his eighth, ninth and tenth League Cup goals in ten League Cup appearances to fire Arsenal into the semi-final of this year’s competition, Eddie Nketiah took control of his destiny as the clock ticks down on his current deal with the club. All were very typical Nketiah goals; the first coming as he followed in Rob Holding’s header to tap in the rebound, the second a composed flick with the outside of his boot after good movement and great work from Nuno Tavares, and the third his second backheeled finish of the season following an incisive Martin Odegaard pass and cheeky Nicolas Pepe assist. When the England Under-21 international was lacking minutes in the second half of last season, Arteta said: “This is one of the hazards to leave someone like Eddie out of the squad, but at the moment everybody has been fit and we have so many options up front. If chances come and he disappoints, even though Arteta wants to keep him, it may not be in a capacity Nketiah feels he deserves — especially as Arsenal will be looking for a new striker no matter what happens.
