Smallcap, midcap indices set for worst month in 5 years. More pain ahead?

Smallcap and midcap indices have been witnessing a prolonged bloodbath and February was no different. The Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices have tumbled 12.5% and 10.7%, respectively, marking their biggest monthly losses since March 2020. “Underwhelming December quarter earnings have made investors cautious about small- and mid-cap stocks, and they could see further pressure,” said Abhilash Pagaria, head of Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research. Despite the prolonged stock market correction, valuations of smallcap and midcap stocks remain elevated. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices are trading at a 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio of 35x and 24x, respectively, well above their 10-year averages of 22.4x and 15x.
