Garang Kuol, Newcastle’s ‘project’ player facing a pivotal six months
New York TimesAs Garang Kuol has discovered, European football is a “dog-eat-dog world”. “I saw the first-team level and, just to see it live in the flesh, the work rate and where I’ve got to get to,” said Kuol, who as an 18-year-old in Qatar in November 2022 became the youngest player to feature in a World Cup knockout match since Pele in 1958. “Brilliant — a really good guy, really bubbly,” Diarmuid O’Carroll, Newcastle’s Under-21 head coach, said of a player he describes as “a fantastic specimen of an athlete”. So it’s been good for him to be with us for a period of time.” O’Carroll is keen to continue working with Kuol and insists “no decisions have been made” as to what happens next. “Physically, tactically, mentally — all aspects of my game.” Clearly, O’Carroll still believes Kuol has the X-factor that attracted Newcastle to invest in him in the first place.
