Queensland public servants urged to reduce electricity use to avoid forced blackouts

Queensland public servants have been urged to reduce electricity consumption to help "avoid forced blackouts in selected suburbs and regions" as the state sweats through a heatwave. Staff were urged to take the voluntary measures in response to an increased risk of power shortages across Queensland, as part of the state's electricity supply emergency response plan. Hot, humid conditions to persist An extreme heatwave warning has been issued for some parts of Queensland this week, with Birdsville peaking at 46 degrees Celsius yesterday and Brisbane reaching 36.4C. Heat leads to power outages Energex spokesperson Danny Donald told ABC Radio Brisbane there 13,500 homes without power yesterday, predominantly related to the heat.
