BJP's Bengal bypoll nominees fare worst in crime record; TMC candidate the richest

The BJP has fielded the highest number of candidates with criminal cases against them for the November 13 bypolls to six assembly seats in West Bengal. The Congress comes second with close to Rs 1 crore of average assets of its nominees while the BJP candidates have assets worth Rs 84 lakh on an average, according to the report. Individually, Dey is followed by Ananya Roy Chakraborty, the BJP’s Bankura candidate, with close to Rs 3 crore worth of assets; next is the Congress’s Paschim Medinipur candidate Shyamal Kumar Ghosh. Interestingly, Debajyoti Mazumder, the Left Front-supported CPI candidate for Naihati and one of Dey’s rivals, owns assets worth Rs 1.69 crore. Kashikanta Barman, a candidate of the Kamtapur Peoples Party for the Sitai seat; Rafikul Islam, an independent candidate for the Haroa seat; and Rupak Mitra, an independent candidate for the Naihati seat, have total assets of Rs 5,000, Rs 9,200 and Rs 16,775 respectively, and feature in the report as the poorest candidates.
