Saints positional previews: Can Adam Trautman be a No. 1 tight end in an offense that relies on them?
New York TimesEditor’s note: This is part of a series of position-by-position articles breaking down every player on the Saints roster as we build up to the start of training camp later this month. The Saints didn’t make a huge splash in free agency like they have before, but they did add former Broncos tight end Nick Vannett. The interesting thing regarding Vannett is that he said he sees himself as the “Y” tight end in the Saints offense, which is the position Saints coach Sean Payton said he envisioned for Trautman after they drafted him last year. For someone who played at a smaller level, you see a dominant player and we see him as someone that can help us as an in-line tight end.” Vannett also mentioned that it seems like the Saints view Trautman as the “F” tight end, or the tight end that is moving around as opposed to a blocking tight end, which could be a sign of how the Saints viewed Trautman’s progress as a pass catching threat last year. Those two definitely take experience with them and it’s too soon to know how the combination of Trautman and Vannett will work in a pass-catching capacity for an offense that heavily relies on tight ends.
