Odisha Panchayat officer arrested for Rs 43 lakh fraud, spends on betting

The Odisha Vigilance Department on Friday arrested Khetramohan Nayak, the Panchayat Executive Officer of Radhadeipur Gram Panchayat in Ganjam district, for allegedly embezzling Rs 43.01 lakh in government funds. Officials said Nayak misused his position by forging the Sarpanch’s signature to withdraw funds through cheques from government accounts held at Axis Bank and Canara Bank’s Digapahandi branch. The misappropriated funds were taken from multiple accounts, including those for the Centrally Investigators found that Nayak, who joined government service in July 2024, began siphoning funds at the start of his tenure. Following the discovery of the fraud, Berhampur Vigilance registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 316, 336, 338, and 340.
