Mike Hoffman, Blues agree to professional tryout with expectation for a contract

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong and salary-capologist Ryan Miller, who was recently promoted to assistant general manager, pulled off a shrewd move Sunday night. The club is still on the hook for Steen’s $3.5 million salary for the 2020-21 season, and his $5.75 million cap hit will technically count against the Blues, but the development will allow them to place the veteran on long-term injury reserve. According to the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement, that permits the Blues to exceed the salary cap by $5.75 million in 2020-21. The latter would leave the Blues with $4.5 million in cap space, but it’s $4.2 million after deducting $300,000 in “carryover bonus overages” due to the fact that the club went over the cap last season when player bonuses were factored in at the end of the year. The Blues will have an estimated $1.7 million in cap space available after Dunn’s signing, and they have a deal with Hoffman for $3.5 million to $4.5 million.
