Read our privacy policy Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has claimed that Emilia Clarke’s first season rape scene was “tough and degrading” for the actor. In the controversial scene, Clarke’s character Daenerys was raped by her new husband Khal Drogo, in an act described in the show as a customary ritual of the fictional Dothraki people. “Ask George R R Martin why he did that, ‘cause that’s on him,” she said in 2016. I’m going to be in control and show you something you’ve never seen before.’” Game of Thrones, which concluded in 2019, was often criticised for its depictions of rape, and its use of sexual violence against women as a narrative tool.
