Checking on Royals' rebuild: An in-depth assessment of the team's moves since last season
New York TimesIt remains the iconic quote of Royals futility, and probably always will: “I never say it can’t get worse.” It has been 12 years since then-manager Buddy Bell said those words after the Royals lost on April 19, 2006, their 10th loss in a row. The Royals also took Burch Smith, who was a much more heralded pitcher – the general consensus was that he was the most major league-ready player selected in last December’s Rule 5 draft – and have not only stuck with him despite a 6.00 ERA, they’ve elevated him into the rotation as well. Check back in three years and you might have a prospect, which, if you’re a team as far away from contention as the Royals are, is totally acceptable. July 27: Traded Mike Moustakas to the Brewers for Brett Phillips and Jorge Lopez You don’t have to wait to enjoy the fruits of this trade, because in exchange for Mike Moustakas, the Royals got a major league-ready outfielder in Brett Phillips, who last night hit a two-run homer for the Royals that provided the margin of victory in a 4-2 win. If that’s all he contributes, he will still be a useful bridge to the Royals’ next wave of outfield prospects that arrives over the next two or three years.
