World War II brides recount marrying US troops in Parachuting into Love book

Sitting at the kitchen table with her fingers entwined around a hot cup of tea, Edie Martinod smiles as she recalls how she met her first husband. Edie, who is now 98 and living in Babinda, said she was surprised when she arrived home that first day with Ray Lyon, one of many American servicemen stationed in Far North Queensland, as part of the USA 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment. The bride ship Two years after marrying Mr Lyon, Edie and their six-month-old daughter Rae boarded a train to Brisbane to travel to America on a "bride ship". "Verla is the reason I came home and didn't get on the ship," Edie said. "We spent the weekend of our wedding at the Railway Hotel, then on the Monday my parents turned up with the bridesmaid, flower girl and my wedding frock for photos," Hilda said.
