NT records No vote on Voice to Parliament, despite remote communities favouring Yes
ABCThe Northern Territory has voted against enshrining a Voice to Parliament in the constitution, rejecting an idea that was formally requested by Indigenous leaders at Uluru in 2017. Lingiari MP Marion Scrymgour, who heavily backed the Yes campaign, said she was "feeling tired" after the last four weeks. But former Greens candidate and Arrernte man Peltherre Chris Tomlins — who voted No — said the referendum outcome was one of the "biggest positive changes" ever seen in the country. He said his parents had been "lied to a lot" while on the missions, and he felt people were also being lied to about the Voice, and were pressured to vote Yes. At a press conference on Sunday afternoon, she said rejecting the Voice was a positive moment for Australia and that a Yes vote would have entrenched "dependency" by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
