No more bets: India's sporting fans deserve better
India TodayIn a fantasy game's new advert that has just hit social media platforms, movie stars and top-line Indian cricketers are seen together in a cozy, luxurious setting that gives off a sense of opulence and sophistication, an overall sense of luxury. For the platforms, a ubiquitous presence on the Indian sporting landscape, especially in cricket, it has been a hard grind knowing that other sites operating outside of the country, masquerading as the real thing has been hitting bottom lines of not only the legitimate gaming companies but potentially wiping off tax revenue losses exceeding Rs 2 lakh crore each year. But a parallel underground ecosystem of illegal betting platforms, exploiting regulatory loopholes and digital anonymity, has overshadowed not just the country's online gaming industry, but also its most popular sport. Estimates peg India's illegal betting market at around Rs 8.2 lakh crore annually, resulting in potential tax revenue losses exceeding Rs 2 lakh crore each year. Reports from the Advertising Standards Council of India have repeatedly flagged instances where influencers, media platforms, and advertisers have promoted illegal betting sites, misleading consumers by blurring the lines between what is legitimate and illegitimate.
