Trump’s Tariffs Promise Is His New Version Of 'Mexico Will Pay For The Wall'

Huff Post

LOADING ERROR LOADING Former President Donald Trump dubiously claimed during Tuesday night’s presidential debate that U.S. consumers would not bear the cost of his proposed tariffs on imported goods. “Who’s going to have higher prices is China, and all of the countries that have been ripping us off for years.” The claim that only other countries would pay for tariffs on products imported into the U.S. is reminiscent of Trump’s promise during the 2016 election that Mexico would pay for his proposed border wall. “I have to have Mexico pay for the wall,” Trump said on a call with Peña Nieto, according to a leaked transcript. Harris, for her part, pointed out that a group of 16 Nobel-prize winning economists said this year Trump’s tariffs would jack up inflation and damage the economy.
