Beijing's South China Sea agreement with the Philippines signals Xi Jinping's softening stance due to economic struggle
ABCChina and the Philippines have reached a temporary agreement on the South China Sea, indicating a potential softening in Beijing's diplomatic stance. The comprehensive reform plan, which covers economic, governance, military, and security aspects, calls for China's party, government, and military to "walk the path of peaceful development" and "firmly pursue an independent and peaceful foreign policy". The blueprint, which aims to achieve "Chinese modernisation" in five years, provides a glimpse into China's future approach to international affairs and domestic economic strategies. Softening regional security stance China's most contentious sovereignty disputes are in the South China Sea, involving claims by Beijing, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Taiwan, among others. In the 20,000-word document, Beijing also emphasises continuing military reforms to safeguard maritime rights, protect Beijing's interests in the South China Sea, and build an "efficient and coordinated" national security system to ensure sovereignty and territorial integrity.
