Fury over man's plans to turn £170k toilet block into 18 glamping pods overlooking iconic landmark off Cornish beach
Daily MailA plan to turn a disused public toilet into a cafe and glamping pod has been poo-pooed by locals. The toilet block sold for £169,000 at auction last year - eight times the £20,000 guide price CGI images submitted in the planning documents by owner Simon Ayres show the proposed designs, which include a pod sat atop the cafe Simon Walters, who lives in the row of properties behind the toilet block, fears the development would block the sea views from his balcony - a key feature of the seafront homes He said: ‘My personal concern is the view, the huts will be a shade under 3m and will be solid across the width of the plot. Homeowners fear the beach huts, which would be placed on the plot of land on either side of the block, would obstruct their views Mr Ayres, who purchased the former toilet block says he 'completely understands' the residents' concerns but that ‘they will still have amazing views' despite the fact 'there will be something in front' A site plan submitted as part of the planning documents shows the development would cover a significant stretch, affecting the views of several properties in the row behind CGI images of what the proposals would look like show the toilet block converted into a cafe, with 18 beach huts on either side, and another placed atop the cafe. Mr Ayres is hopeful that the application will be approved, admitting that the purchase had cost him 'a lot more than expected' but felt it was worth getting because of the 'stunning views' Another CGI aerial image of what the proposals would look like from the east A sign on the toilet block alerts locals that the planning application is in, inviting them to comment on the plans The block had been left disused by Cornwall Council for 12 years and was covered in graffiti when Mr Ayres purchased the property. ‘If it was a cafe with part of the land used as an outside dining area so people could come off the path properly, that would be ok. Jane Mackenzie voiced concerns over the impact the proposals would have on the footpath The toilet block is sat on a narrow footpath and is directly in front of a train track The lines run behind the toilet block.
