'Tanneries Caused Irreversible Damage' : Supreme Court Passes Directions On Pollution In TN's Vellore, Asks Polluters To Compensate

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a set of directions to mitigate the pollution caused by the enormous discharge of untreated effluents by tanneries into the Palar River in Vellore District.Notable among them are the directions to pay compensation to the affected families, to recover the compensation from the polluting industries as per the "polluter pays". The State Government in consultation with the Central Government shall within a period of four weeks shall constitute a committee under the chairmanship of a retired High Court judge and members comprising Secretaries of State and Central Departments, environmental experts, representatives of the affected communities and any other person deem if for the purpose of conducting an audit to maintain and create a clean and healthy environment in Vellore. The Supreme Court directed compensation to be paid to the families and individuals in terms of the award passed by the Loss of Ecology Authority, Tamil Nadu, dated March 7, 2001.
