It felt like another person weaponizing the “Angry Black Female” stereotype, another person finding reasons Reese shouldn’t be herself. “Kim has had to deal with certain things,” Reese’s mother says, “and I think conversations with Kim have helped Angel try to learn how to handle negative things said about her.” But while Mulkey helped Reese handle the negative aspects that come with Reese’s persona, Reese thinks she also helped encourage the positive parts. She is harder on Reese than anybody, and Reese welcomes it, saying she and Mulkey “are like the same person.” “I’m able to be authentically me,” Reese says.
