Shark sightings on the rise at Perth beaches but surfers happy to play the odds

The risk of a shark attack is low and it's worth playing the odds almost every time if there are good waves to be had. Surfers fatalistic about shark risk Perth beaches have been closed several times already this spring, while a junior surfing competition was called off at Trigg after a four-metre great white shark was sighted. According to University of Western Australia professor of emergency medicine Peter Sprivulis — who in 2014 published a risk assessment of shark attacks in WA — the likelihood of an attack on Perth's beaches is very low. Surf Life Saving WA general manager Chris Peck said technology like the clever buoys trialled off City Beach would play a growing role in shark detection. "Whether that's through the use of algorithms that are able to auto-detect and do a better job at getting through the water column, whether it's through the sonar bases that we've seen or further tagging outcomes, I think is where we're going to see the next leap forward in early detection rather than the shark being in that space already," Mr Peck said.
