The Ukrainian troops on Zmiiniy Island — also known as Snake Island — may instead have been captured by Russian military forces, according to a statement from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Sponsor Message Last Thursday, a Russian warship reportedly approached Snake Island, which is located in the Black Sea off the Ukraine-Romania border and asked the Ukrainian forces there to surrender. TASS, the Russian state news agency, said Friday that no Ukrainian troops had died in the confrontation but rather that 82 Ukrainian service members "voluntarily surrendered" to Russian forces.
