DU colleges put off admission process after row with UGC

New Delhi: Colleges under the jurisdiction of Delhi University on Monday deferred admissions that were to commence on Tuesday after a University Grants Commission directive to roll back the four-year undergraduate programme was met with defiance by the university. The ministry of human resources development is unwilling to interfere even though UGC chairman Ved Prakash met HRD minister Smriti Irani and ministry officials twice in the day, said three government officials who did not want to be named. “UGC is the apex body on university matters and we would not interfere in the matter between a regulator and the university,” said one of the officials cited above. “And now, therefore, the commission, while reiterating its directive of 20th June.hereby orders that admission for academic year 2014-15 at the undergraduate level.under the University of Delhi shall only be to the three-year undergraduation program which was offered prior to the introduction of FYUP..Any deviation from this directive.shall be deemed to be in contravention of the UGC act 1956 with its consequence,” the UGC said in its order dated 22 June.
