Interview: Aditya Vikram Sengupta reveals why Mayanagar took so long to release, if there is a Satyajit Ray connect

Hindustan Times

Aditya Vikram Sengupta burst into the scene with Asha Jawar Majhe a decade ago. On the film's release Mayanagar premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. Then the counterpart in India which was supposed to take care of the distribution of the film dissolved… It then took a while to get operational rights back to us and then get the film released.” The director adds that he is not worried about the response, adding: “In fact, it is the most exciting part of the film's journey. It contains different worlds within, so from that point of view, I am very excited to see the people of this place getting to see the film.” The first seed for the film arrived when Aditya saw this dinosaur statue outside Kolkata's Science City, which was fast being overshadowed by the construction of a new flyover. The Bengali title of the film, Mayanagar, has quite a similar parallel to Mahanagar, the much revered Satyajit Ray film, which released in 1963.
