In charts - has Covid brought an end to the daily commute?

As the economy reopens, the future of many businesses in high streets and city centres will depend on the office workers and daily commuters who have been absent for months. But as shops, pubs and restaurants reopen commuters are not following, as public transport networks shunt along on reduced capacity and offices remain closed. Boris Johnson will on Friday tell the nation it is time to get back to work after the Governor of the Bank of England said people's "fear" of commuting was "holding back the recovery". Public transport decimated Trains, buses and tubes have ground to a halt during the pandemic, and despite businesses beginning to reopen, they are not yet close to returning to normal.
