Black hole spotted 'choking' on star 300m light years away

Scientists have spotted a black hole 300 million light years away that’s ‘choking’ on its stellar dinner. Observations with two different telescopes have revealed a bizarre pattern in the energy of a ‘tidal disruption flare’ in the distant galaxy, which occurs when a black hole devours a nearby star. Further investigation showed evidence of a repeating pattern of fluctuation, suggesting that a ‘hungry’ black hole suddenly encountered an ‘unlucky star full of matter,’ and is now choking on the infalling debris. ‘This is telling us that the black hole is ‘choking’ on this sudden supply of stellar debris.’ These events allow researchers to detect ‘hidden’ black holes, which are not actively feeding. ‘Knowing exactly what happens in tidal disruption flares could help us understand this black hole and galaxy coevolution process.’ Further investigation showed evidence of a repeating pattern of fluctuation, suggesting that a ‘hungry’ black hole suddenly encountered an ‘unlucky star full of matter,’ and is now choking on the infalling debris.
