Why Haldwani protest has become Shaheen Bagh-like political flashpoint in Uttarakhand
India TodayOn Thursday, the Supreme Court stayed the Uttarakhand High Court's order asking residents of Haldwani to evacuate from 29 acres of "railway" land. This is because the high court order might lead to the demolition of schools, temples, banks, mosques and about 4,000 houses seen as encroachments on government land. On Wednesday, Uttarakhand's former chief minister and Congress leader Harish Rawat held a one-hour silent protest at his home in Dehradun against the planned demolition which he said will impact 50,000 people including children, pregnant women and older adults. After activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan made a formal mention in the Supreme Court, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices SA Nazeer and PS Narasimha said it would hear the matter on Thursday.
