Steak is still safe to eat, experts say, despite the coronavirus outbreak at a Melbourne abattoir
ABCA coronavirus outbreak at a Melbourne meatworks has left some consumers questioning the safety of the meat they are grabbing off supermarket shelves. Professor Mackay said there was "no indication" humans could acquire the virus "from raw meat". A spokesperson said COVID-19 is "not a foodborne disease" and there is no evidence that people can get the virus through food or food packaging. "While it is suspected COVID-19 may have originated in animals, it's not likely transmission to humans occurs through meat in Australia," the spokesperson said. Human transmission of much greater concern Professor Mackay said it was "certainly safe to continue eating meat" — even from abattoirs linked to outbreaks.
