Harry Mallinder becomes latest rugby player to quit sport for NFL
The TelegraphHarry Mallinder, the former Northampton playmaker, will join Louis Rees-Zammit in leaving rugby in a bid to crack the NFL. Just days after Wales and Gloucester wing Rees-Zammit shocked the rugby world by announcing that he would be taking up a place on the NFL’s International Player Pathway, Mallinder announced that he would be following the same route and will try out as a kicker and punter. Son of former Northampton director of rugby Jim, Malinder appeared all down the backline and was called up by Eddie Jones for England’s tour to Argentina but did not win a cap. However, his career was severely derailed by a serious knee injury in 2018 and now he will follow in the footsteps of Christian Wade, Alex Gray and Christian Scotland-Williamson in attempting to gain a place on a NFL’s roster through their IPP programme.
